(POLL) 57% support firing squad for Fort Hood killer

The following is from Rasmussen Reports.

A majority of likely US voters say they approve of executing convicted Fort Hood mass murderer Nidal Hasan by firing squad, even as overall support for the death penalty has declined. That’s according to a new Rasmussen Reports survey.

Fifty-seven percent (57%) say they approve of the planned execution, including 38% who strongly approve. Thirty-two percent (32%) say they disapprove, including 19% who strongly disapprove. Another 12% say they are unsure.

Hasan, a former Army major, killed 13 people and wounded 32 others in the 2009 Fort Hood massacre. President Donald Trump signed an order last week approving his execution by firing squad in December.

The survey finds that 49% of voters say they favor the death penalty in general, down from 61% in 2018. Thirty-eight percent (38%) say they oppose it, while 18% are unsure.

Among voters who favor the death penalty, 80% say they approve of Hasan’s execution by firing squad. However, 29% of those who oppose capital punishment in general also say they approve of his planned execution.

Opinions differ along party lines. Seventy-seven percent (77%) of Republicans say they approve of the firing squad execution, compared with 39% of Democrats and 56% of unaffiliated voters.

On the death penalty more broadly, 64% of Republicans, 35% of Democrats and 49% of unaffiliated voters say they support capital punishment.

The survey also asked voters which execution method they consider the most humane and effective.

Thirty-two percent (32%) say lethal injection, followed by 15% who choose firing squad, 8% who select the electric chair and 5% who choose hanging.

Another 32% say they believe there is no humane and effective method of carrying out the death penalty.

The survey of 1,075 likely US voters was conducted Oct. 7-8 and 11, 2026, by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is ±3 percentage points with a 95% confidence level. Fieldwork was conducted by Pulse Opinion Research LLC.
