Nearly two-thirds of likely US voters say the government needs to regulate artificial intelligence technology.

That’s according to a new Rasmussen Reports survey.

Sixty-four percent (64%) say government regulation of AI is needed, up from 61% in March. Twenty-six percent (26%) say the government should stay out of the way and let the free market decide, while 10% are unsure.

Democrats have a nine-point advantage when voters are asked which party they trust more to handle AI-related issues. Forty-seven percent (47%) say they trust Democrats more, compared with 38% who say they trust Republicans. Fifteen percent (15%) are unsure.

Majorities across party lines say government needs to regulate AI, including 74% of Democrats, 54% of Republicans and 63% of unaffiliated voters. Among unaffiliated voters, 43% trust Democrats more to handle AI issues, compared with 31% who trust Republicans.

The survey also finds concern about AI’s impact on employment. Fifty-seven percent (57%) say AI will mean fewer job opportunities for human workers, while 21% say it will create more opportunities. Ten percent (10%) say it will not have much impact, and 11% are unsure.

Seventy-nine percent (79%) say they are familiar with computer-based AI technology, up from 72% in March. That includes 32% who say they are very familiar with it. Among those who are very familiar with AI, 71% favor government regulation.

The survey of 1,074 likely US voters was conducted Sept. 16-17 and Sept. 20, 2026, by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work was conducted by Pulse Opinion Research LLC.
