A new study published in JAMA Pediatrics reveals that preterm infants vaccinated at two months are 170% more likely to experience apnea—a pause in breathing lasting over 20 seconds—compared to unvaccinated infants. Critics say the findings raise serious concerns about vaccinating preterm babies without considering their unique vulnerabilities.
The study authors acknowledged the increased risk of apnea in preterm infants but maintained that vaccinations for hospitalized preterm infants remain important due to their vulnerability to infectious diseases.
Apnea is more than just a temporary health concern for preterm infants. Dr. Karl Jablonowski, Senior Research Scientist at Children’s Health Defense, noted its broader implications:

Experts have raised alarms about the sheer number of vaccines administered to infants. Dr. Peter McCullough noted that current immunization schedules often cluster up to seven vaccines at two months and as many as 16 by the time infants are 12–15 months old. He suggested that this clustering might contribute to unmonitored apnea episodes, febrile seizures, and potentially sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
The study also highlighted additional risks. Four vaccinated preterm infants developed suspected cases of sepsis, compared to only one unvaccinated infant. Experts suggest the cumulative stress of administering multiple vaccines simultaneously could overwhelm the fragile immune systems of preterm infants, leading to inflammatory responses or symptoms mimicking sepsis.

The long-term consequences of apnea are still being studied, but Christina Parks, Ph.D., warned that its role in sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) has been largely overlooked. She criticized the healthcare system for failing to address these risks in vaccination guidelines, particularly for vulnerable preterm infants.

Experts are calling for a reevaluation of vaccination schedules for preterm infants, including:
- Adopting weight-based dosing to account for the smaller body mass and underdeveloped systems of preterm babies.
- Prioritizing non-aluminum vaccines.
- Delaying non-essential vaccinations until infants reach greater physiological maturity.
These recommendations aim to safeguard preterm infants by addressing their unique vulnerabilities and minimizing unnecessary risks.
