One purpose of the FDA is to keep fake drugs off the market, but as in this case, they only sometimes learn secondhand that it is happening. Yet we should expect that very expensive drugs will of course be counterfeited, whether or not the counterfeit actually has any active ingredients in it. the complexity of the supply chain, often with many middlemen, makes this sort of scam irresistible to scammers. Barcoding could prevent this. Why don’t these agencies come up with simple solutions to big problems like this?
